New Year Update

The Heritage Centre will only be open on Saturdays for the coming winter months. The hours remain the same 10.30 to 1:00pm. During this time we hope to refresh the exhibits and add to the databases we already have. As with any Voluntary organisation we are dependant on the help forthcoming from our members and hope more of you may get involved and we would also welcome any ideas from you for the way forward.
Bembridge Then And Now

Bembridge Heritage held their annual exhibition over the week-end of 12/13th August 2023 at the Village Hall. The exhibition was sponsored this year by the Bembridge Harbour Trust and was entitled "Bembridge Then and Now".
Ken Orchard, one of the Bembridge Heritage Trustees, took the concept of comparing Bembridge of yesteryear with modern Bembridge and ran with it putting in a great deal of hard work selecting historical photos and then putting the legwork in to take the modern equivalent for comparison. The old photographs alongside their modern equivalent with relevant historical facts were displayed on boards exhibited in the hall. A database held by the Trust containing thousands of images was made available during the exhibition, this same database is available to visitors at the Bembridge Heritage Centre during opening hours. Also on display were maps from the 19th and 20th century.
The exhibition drew several hundred visitors over the week-end. The overwhelming feedback from attendees was very positive with many of them taking the time to thank the Trustees and let them know that the subject of the exhibition was fascinating. They enjoyed the chance to see how the village has developed from Victorian times to the present day. For a long time Bembridge has been a popular holiday destination. We had a number of people comment on the happy times they had spent here in the fifties and sixties and it was evident that many families returned here year after year.
Special thanks to Chris Grant and her team who provided refreshments throughout. Also thanks to Patty Kenny and her helpers John and Jean Woodford, Derek Sothcott and Shirley Wiles who organised the raffle. Both the refreshments and the raffle, along with donations have helped boost funds enabling the Trust to preserve our Village heritage. Thanks also to Penny Walford for help in the preparation of the exhibition display panels and to Bembridge Men in Sheds for material preparation. The Trustees along with a handful of volunteers worked hard to make the week-end the success it was. In the meantime we are always looking for more volunteers to help us keep moving forward.
